Best Practices: Process Management: Proactively Develop Staff
Commentary

Purchasing, at long last, has Boardroom visibility. GM’s Lopez gave purchasing a lot of visibility in all corporations and purchasing heads responded by creating a lot of value. The profit power of purchasing is now routinely included in the budget process. For Purchasing to continue to deliver value departments must develop a power staff. The challenge is to attract, train, and tap the potential of great people. A powerful tool is to have a staff development plan that identifies a career path for those entering into the department, a training program that will build purchasing and other business skills and an avenue to leaving purchasing. The days when people send their entire careers in purchasing are over. The best departments intend for stars to come go. There is no better ambassador for purchasing than a former member of the team!
